Biography

My research focuses on the social epidemiologic approaches to understanding violence. In particular, this work has focused on understanding broader social causes and the role of environmental and community factors in explaining differences in the manifestation of violence from both developmental and secular perspectives. it has included the measurement of neighborhood processes both as putative causes and as outcomes, including measures related to youth violence. I have published my work in leading journals including the American Journal of Epidemiology and the American Journal of Public Health. I served as the Director of the Center for Injury Research and Control (CIRCL) from 2008 to 2010, and currently as the Director of the Consortium for Injury Research and Community Action (CIRCA) I have led national symposiums on how social factors affect violence and have been invited to speak across the country. The NIH, the CDC, the Department of Defense and other institutions have funded my work. I received an MPH and PhD in Epidemiology from the University of Pittsburgh and served as a Visiting Professor at Cambridge University, England.
