Biography

Michael Yonas, DrPH, MPH serves as the Senior Porgram Officer for Special Innovation, Research and Special Initiatives at The Pittsburgh Foundation.  Dr. Yonas' work and research over the last 17 years has utilized a variety of traditional and innovative community engagement approaches to engage, understand and address factors influencing disparities in health, safety and well-being of children and vulnerable populations.  His is uniquely passionate and dedicated to working with and learning from community youth and families and cultivating culturally sensitive opportunities for informing action, change and system-reforms that reflect the priorities of communities, organizations and other stakeholders.  His most recent efforts have focused on examning the influences of stress on health and childhood asthma, systems for serving the individuals living in a housing crisis, and strategies for promoting community and school safety.  Dr. Yonas has specialized training and experience using the creative arts to engage youth and communities in research and in the application of principles of community-based participatory research (CBPR).  Dr. Yonas most recently served as Director of Research, Evaluation and Engagement at the Allegheny County Department of Human Services and was on faculty at the University of Pittsburgh Schools of Medicine, Public Health and Social Work.
