Biography

I assumed the position of Professor and Chair in July 2001 following a 22 year active duty career in the U.S. Army. I am responsible for the educational, research and clinical activities of the undergraduate and graduate medical education, faculty practice, and community arms of 3 family medicine residencies and nine ambulatory clinical sites in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. I have been a strong advocate for care of the underserved in western Pennsylvania and elimination of health disparities. I am a practicing family physician, to include maternity care, as well as an academician with specific research interests in the areas of cultural competence, maternity care, and health disparities in the community. I also serve as the Director of the Center for Primary Care Community-based Research in the Department of Family Medicine and promote community oriented research in western Pennsylvania. Current projects involve identifying and educating minority women regarding their risks for cardiovascular disease, assessing barriers to care for teen mothers and the impact of educating teen mothers regarding subsequent pregnancy avoidance and maintenance of health.
