I was a former Navy Dental Officer and VA dentist. I have been a diplomate of the American Board of Dental Public Health since 1987, I was also a past president of the American Association for Public Health Dentistry, and the current Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Public Health Dentistry. I currently serve on numerous local, state, and national committees aimed at reducing oral health disparities, increasing the dental workforce, and improving access to oral care.  Most recently, I served on the Institute of Medicine’s Committee on an Oral Health Initiative, which provided Congress with a plan for improving oral health policy within the Department of Health and Human Services.  I am also a member of the National Advisory Dental & Craniofacial Research Council of the NIH, and serve as a member of the Public Health Advisory Board for the American Dental Association.  My research involves general and social epidemiological research related to oral health disparities and oral disease etiology. I am presently PI or co-PI on several federal-funded grants (HRSA, NIH) related to oral disease etiology and eliminating health disparities. I also oversee the joint degree program in dentistry and public health and I am active in teaching in public health and evidence-based health care. I received my MPH and dental degree from the University of Pittsburgh and my doctorate in epidemiology from the University of Michigan.
